The π A → ππ A reaction — •Carsten Isselhorst, Zoheir Aouissat, and Jochen Wambach — Institut fuer Kernphysik Schlossgartenstr.9 64289 Darmstadt
Chiral symmetry and its restoration has attracted great interest from experimental as well as theoretical side in the past few years.
Experiments done by the CHAOS Collaboration in 1996 have shown an enhancement in the invariant mass spectrum of the π A → ππ A reaction near the two pion threshold. This has also been confirmed by an experiment by the Crystal Ball collaboration. In the present talk we try to connect this experimental results with partial restoration of chiral symmetry. To achieve this we developed a model for the pion and its chiral partner, the sigma meson, which preserves the constraints from chiral symmetry. This leads to a strong reshapening of the Tππ scattering matrix in the medium. This is then used to calculate the total and differential cross section for the π A → ππ A reaction and compared with the CHAOS experiment.
