We measured molecular frame angular distributions of NO 4σ−1 photoelectrons and photoions after excitation with linearly and circularly polarized light at hν=40.8 eV. The angular correlations of the emitted electrons and ions were analyzed using a new fitting procedure which takes into account all experimental angular resolution effects. For the first time a complete description of the valence photoionization of a heteronuclear molecule was derived from photoelectron and photoion angular distributions. The combination of measurements with linearly and circularly polarized light leads to a unique set of dipole matrix elements and phase differences describing the 4σ−1 inner valence photoioinization of NO. All σ−σ and σ−π dipole transition parameters were simultaneously derived without any additional input from ab initio model calculations. The reliability of the method is estimated using standard fit analysis functions supplying future molecular structure calculations such as RPA and LDA with quantitative benchmarks.
