Clusters built from polar molecules like SO2 decay into positively and negatively charged fragments upon collision with a target surface. We recently explained this effect in terms of a pickup of alkali surface adsorbates during the collision, followed by electron delocalization. Here we discuss the co-pickup of polar spectator molecules like H2O during the surface impact. Of particular interest is the pickup of fluorescein (C20H10O5Cl2) which may offer new means for the mass spectrometry of bio-molecules.
