The recent advances in optical frequency measurements open the opportunity to determine the splitting of atomic states directly by optical methods with an accuracy comparable to the accuracy of RF measurements. The recent results of the 1S-2S transition frequency measurement in atomic hydrogen demonstrate the possibility to perform an alternative determination of the 2S hyperfine splitting with an accuracy similar to that of the RF technique result (HFS(2S) = 177556785(29) Hz) [1].
By measuring the frequencies of all two-photon 1S-2S transitions of the Zeeman multiplet and using the Breit-Rabi equation, it is possible to determine the 2S hyperfine splitting with an appropriate accuracy. Two high-finess stable reference cavities at our disposal give the opportunity to perform all four measurements in a short-time period which does not impose extremely strong requirements on the frequency standard.
This experiment is an independent test of our 1S-2S measurement technique as well as the demonstration that the optical frequency measurements have reached limits which could not be beaten over some decades.
