We present results on multiple-electron removal in collisions of He2+ ions on Na at 6 keV/amu impact energy. We use the new technique of MOTRIMS, which combines recoil ion momentum spectroscopy and magneto-optical (atom) trapping. This combination facilitates the measurement of the minute recoil momenta of the target ions, which are linked to impact parameter and energy gain or loss of the reaction processes. After demonstrating the versatility of MOTRIMS on multiple-electron removal in O6+-Na collisions [1], higher-resolution experiments were done on He2+-Na collisions. We have measured not only single and double electron capture, but also the unexpected creation of Na3+ ions. Direct ionization studies at such low collision energies (v < 0.5 a.u.) have turned out to be very difficult if not impossible. MOTRIMS offers a unique possibility to access ionization related processes at low collision energies.
