We report on the interference between the leading electric–dipole (E1) and the – much weaker – magnetic–quadrupole (M2) transitions which occurs in the Lyman–α1 (2p3/2 → 1s1/2) decay in hydrogen–like ions [1]. This interference is found to affect considerably the angular distribution and polarization of the emitted photons. A rather remarkable correction shows up not only for heavy but also for medium–Z elements.

To emphasize the importance of this E1–M2 interference for the interpretation of experimental results, we consider the radiative decay following an electron capture into excited levels of the bare uranium ion. From angular distribution of the Lyman–α1 photons, a significant alignment of the 2p3/2 state was deduced experimentally [2] but until now not well reproduced by theory [3]. However, this discrepancy is removed if the interference of the E1 and M2 decay channels is taken into account. A similar large interference can be expected also for the properties of characteristic radiation in the few– (or many–) electron ions.
