Dielectronic recombination into highly charged heavy ions with emission of two photons — •Stephan Zakowicz, Werner Scheid, and Norbert Grün — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen

The process of dielectronic recombination (DR) with emission of two photons is treated theoretically. In the case of KLL-DR into hydrogen-like ions, the system is not stable until both electrons are de-excited, giving rise to the emission of two photons. On the basis of a projection operator formalism, perturbative expressions are derived for the cross sections. The results for the total cross section for U91+ ions are presented and compared to those which have been obtained previously in a calculation considering only one photon emission. In addition, the angular distribution of the two photons and their correlation are examined. The results are then applied to an RTE (Resonant Transfer and Excitation) experiment, which has been conducted recently at GSI.
