Ion detection scheme for a storage ring target made of laser-trapped atoms — •J. Kleinert, B. Eike, U. Eisenbarth, R. Grimm*, D. Schwalm, and M. Weidemüller — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, 69029 Heidelberg, Germany
Ultracold atoms confined in a laser trap represent a unique target for collision experiments. We have realized such a target at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring TSR using a magneto-optical trap for cesium atoms [1]. The atoms are trapped at a temperature below 100 µK in a cloud of 100 µm diameter. The cloud’s position can be controlled horizontally and vertically by static magnetic fields over a range of 20 mm. The backaction of the control fields on the stored ion beam is compensated by additional field coils.
Collisions between highly charged ions and cesium atoms are studied
and total cross sections for trap-loss collisions are determined. In
order to distinguish between different collision processes a detector
for ionized target atoms is to be installed. To achieve high
sensitivity, the design of the detector reduces the background signal
of ions which are created by collisions of the ion beam with the
residual gas molecules (pressure ∼ 10−11 mbar).
