Classical dynamic behavior from a fully quantum mechanical description — •Michael Brieger — DLR, Institute of Technical Physics, Pfaffenwaldring 38-40, D-70569 Stuttgart, Germany

Applied to the hyperfine coupling in the electronic ground state of H or Ag, the rigorous analytical solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for angular momentum coupling in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field and their linear superpositions in the four-dimensional Hilbert space of the basis vectors are used to show that expectation values do behave “classically” in every dynamical respect: While eigenstates are identified as rare situations of dynamical balance, which require any external and internal torque to vanish, linear combinations of the eigenfunctions produce the classical Larmor precession though complicated by the resultant total magnetic moment’s internal oscillations. Driven by the difference of the constituent magnetic moments, this nonstationary behavior makes all fequencies allowed in M1 transitions between the eigenstates in the field contribute simultaneously to the spatial motion of the total magnetic moment. Their ESR and NMR line strengths are associated with corresponding components of the total magnetic moment. Energetically almost stable, the nonstationary states in these atoms are responsible for an observable, hitherto unknown type of susceptibility.
