The C60 cluster is an interesting model system for studying
laser-matter interaction. The high degree of symmetry facilitates the
studies of a complex system. Photoelectron spectroscopy has illuminated
extremely diverse characteristics varying from a solid-like delayed
ionization to atom-like Rydberg structure. Laser pulse duration dependence
on the photoelectron spectra has shown three distinctive ionization
regions, one prompt, direct ionization for pulse durations less than 100 fs
is characterized by above threshold ionization peaks. The first thermal
region results from electronically hot, but vibrationally cool C60
occurring with laser pulse durations between 100 and 700 fs, and a second
thermal region, characterized by electronic emission on the microsecond
timescale with significantly lower temperature despite the same laser
fluence as compared to the first thermal region and occurs with pulse
durations in the range of picoseconds. At relatively low laser
intensities, an additional structure was observed on top of the thermal
electron distribution. This structure has been attributed to Rydberg Series
[1]. This presentation will discuss recent experimental results on the
Rydberg structure.
