To explore the power of fs-pump-probe spectroscopy in multidimensional systems, e.g. condensed phases, we investigate a diatomic molecule (I2) isolated in a solid rare gas (Kr)[1]. We demonstrate a scheme to derive potentials and dynamics directly from pump-probe spectra. By tuning both pump and probe pulses (30 fs, visible from NOPA) we construct 1D-representations of the excited state surfaces of the I2 molecule in Kr including the dynamic cage potential from the surrounding Kr atoms. The potentials are compared to DIM calculations.

For excitation at the gas phase dissociation limit we take snapshots of a mean trajectory by tuning the wavelength of the probe pulse. A very strong coupling of the energy into the Kr solvent can be directly observed near the outer turning point. The experiment is compared to results from trajectory calculations.

From these experiments a deeper understanding of the spectroscopy and simulation of ultrafast molecule-solvent interactions is obtained which may contribute to develop reduced-dimensionality models of multidimensional quantum-dynamics.
