Momentum distributions of photoelectrons formed from Argon gas exposed to 80fs pulses of a Ti:Sapphire laser are compared with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The theory treats the one-electron problem in an empirical potential which precisely reproduces the stationary one-electron excited states of the argon atom[1]. A realistic spatial and temporal distribution of laser intensities in the focal volume is accounted for by the theory and the experimental counting efficiency is explicitly included in the comparison. At intensities ranging from 2x1013 to 7x1013 W/cm2 the experimental distributions reveals complex angular patterns with a strong variation with intensity. All features in the spectra are precisely reproduced by theory. The project is supported by SFB 276-C14
