Three-Particle Decay of Rydberg Molecules of Triatomic Hydrogen. — •Ulrich Galster, Patrick Kaminski, Hanspeter Helm, and Ulrich Müller — Fakultät für Physik, Univ. Freiburg, Herman-Herder-Str.3, D-79104 Freiburg
Experimental correlation maps of the final-state atomic momentum vectors are obtained for the three-particle decay of neutral triatomic hydrogen. The photofragment spectrometer developed at Freiburg [1] collects triple coincidences of H(1s)+H(1s)+H(1s) atoms on multi-hit, time- and position-sensitive detectors following selective laser excitation of Rydberg molecules of H3. The correlation maps provide a most direct view of how a neutral Rydberg molecule enters into the neutral dissociation continuum at molecular distances and how it emerges from this continuum at the separated atom limit. Complex patterns of preferred predissociation which sensitively depend on the initial rovibronic state and its energy are observed. Our state-selective approach provides a stringent test of the quality of any theoretical treatment of the e+H3+ problem and its applicability to predict a reliable cross section for dissociative recombination [2].
