Electron-induced reactions are of interest for patterning of organic films at the nanometer length scale. Details of these processes can be studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy which provides simultaneous irradiation with electrons of well-defined energy and spectroscopic monitoring of the products [1]. Contrary to previous findings for small molecules in direct contact with metal surfaces the reactions in multilayer molecular films are fast enough to be monitored at currents typical of high-resolution instruments. Examples of such reactions are presented together with first results on quantitative reaction cross sections.
