The SHIPTRAP facility at GSI Darmstadt is designed to deliver cooled and purified ion bunches of heavy radionuclides produced at SHIP. In the SHIPTRAP set-up the secondary ion beam from SHIP enters a helium-filled chamber. The stopped ions are guided to an exit nozzle and then focussed via a radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) to enter another RFQ used as ion accumulator, cooler and buncher. A RFQ buncher is a novel instrument applied at radioactive-beam facilities and a key element for the manipulation of radioactive ions at SHIPTRAP. The ion bunch is then extracted into a Penning trap system for high-precision mass measurements and other experiments on actinides and transactinides isotopes. The RFQ buncher was succesfully tested at GSI with stable argon and xenon ions from an off-line ion source. The dependence of the trapping efficiency and of the pulse width of the extracted ion bunch on the axial DC field, on the rf amplitude, and on the ion species was investigated. the achieved bunching efficiency is 30% after a cooling time of 10ms. We increased the accumulation and trapping time up to 1s as a test for accumulation with low ion production rates as expected from SHIP. The trapped and extracted ions were identified by time of flight and the minimum pulse width achieved is 200ns.
