Stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS) is studied in multimode glass fibers with core diameters between 25 µm and 200 µm. The SBS threshold, reflectivity, and damage threshold were measured. High SBS reflectivities, over than 80 % are obtained with 30 ns laser pulses, at 1.06 µm wavelength. The experimental results regarding the SBS reflectivity are compared with an analytical calculation for a plane wave model of the SBS process. The Brillouin gain coefficient of the fibers appeared to be about equal to the bulk gain coefficient.
