Paradox-based quantum gates with cold trapped ions — •Almut Beige, Wolfgang Lange, and Herbert Walther — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Hans-Kopfermann-Str. 1, 85748 Garching, Germany
Two-qubit gates based on an environment-induced quantum Zeno effect are discussed. Each qubit is formed by two ground states of an ion stored inside a linear trap as part of an ion chain. First, all ions are cooled into the vibrational ground state and additional laser fields are applied. Then a weak laser pulse suffices to perform a CNOT gate with a very high fidelity. If the operation fails, photons are emitted at a high rate. This can easily be detected and the computation can be restarted.
