We report the observation of self-mode-locking in a diode pumped self-Q-switched Nd3+,Cr4+:YAG laser. This phenomenon, which is believed to have been previously unreported, results from significant excited state absorption of the Cr4+ ion in the codoped host during the self-Q-switched laser pulses.
The self-mode-locking occurs already slightly above the SQS laser threshold at an intra-cavity saturable intensity of only 1.0 MW/cm2. Experiments using different laser configurations show that long cavities exhibit stable mode locking and better modulation depth through coupling of many modes, while short cavities exhibit very low threshold but instable mode locking.
