Nonlinearity is one of the most prominent features of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, which makes them suitable sources for the experimental study of nonlinear atom-optical effects, such as solitons and vortices.

We report on the creation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in 87Rb in a magnetic TOP trap and present the details of our experiment. First tests to tailor the dispersion relation of the atomic matter wave are discussed. This No-dqdispersion managementNo-dq is realized by putting the condensate into a one-dimensional periodic light shift potential. It can be used to reach the regime of a condensate with negative effective mass.

In a condensate with repulsive interaction such as 87Rb, a negative effective mass is an important prerequisite for the creation of bright solitons. The latest results of our experiment towards the realization of bright atomic solitons are presented.
