We investigate the possibility to confine a neutral atom in the one-dimensional optical lattice created by two counterpropagating laser beams. We find the bound states of the atomic translational degree of freedom, as well as their energies, for different values of the relevant parameters. The investigated configuration, based on schemes applied to confine single atoms or atomic condensates, can be realized in the framework of the present studies of condensates within optical lattices.
