We investigate the processes occurring when intense femtosecond laser pulses are focused into bulk dielectric materials. (2+1)-D non-linear Schroedinger equation is analyzed taking into account group velocity dispersion, diffraction, and the polarization change due to non-linear refractive index change, as well as multiphoton absorption and plasma formation. The split-step method on 3-D grid and Crank-Nickolson scheme are used to realize the solution. The asymmetrical pulse splitting character is analyzed in dependence on the sample thickness, the input beam power, the self-focusing threshold, and the group velocity dispersion. Some open questions concerning the femtosecond laser-induced breakdown are discussed. The results of numerical modelling are compared with experimental data provided by time-resolved optical interferometry.
