Dynamics of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate — •Peter Rosenbusch, Vincent Bretin, Frédéric Chevy, and Jean Dalibard — Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, Ecole Normale Supérieure, 24 rue Lhomond, 75231 Paris, FRANCE
We study the oscillations of an elongated rubidium condensate in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap. The condensate is excited either by a temporal change of the magnetic trapping potential or by the addition of a red-detuned laser beam which is rotated in the transverse plane of the condensate. The low engergy eigenmodes are studied as a function of excitation strength and temperature. In particular, for the monopole or No-dqbreathing modeNo-dq, an extraordinarily small damping rate γ0 is observed at ultra-low temperatures leading to a quality factor Q=ω0/γ0 > 2000, where ω0 is the mode angular frequency.
