Simplified Calculation of the Intensity Correlation Function of Systems with Bright and Dark Periods and Application to Cooperative Effects — •Dirk Seidel and Gerhard C. Hegerfeldt — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Bunsenstr. 9, 37073 Göttingen, Germany

It is known, that driven quantum systems with metastable states can show macroscopic dark periods in their fluorescence. Therefore a fluorescence trajectory of one or two trapped atoms can be understood as a telegraph process.

We have used this property to approximately determine the intensity correlation function (ICF) of such systems in closed form. We illustrate our approach by the example of two dipole-dipole interacting three level atoms with V scheme, which is of great interest for the investigation of cooperative effects. We can show that cooperative effects have a less important influence on the ICF compared to the mean duration of bright and dark periods. In addition, our simple approach can be used to obtain parameters like Einstein coefficients and the duration of bright and dark periods from measured ICFs.
