Optical properties of nanoscopic systems are of current interest. In this paper we examine the fluorescence of an atomic dipole in a 2D dielectric particle of subwavelength dimensions. Our approach consists of solving Maxwell equations with polarization sources using surface integral equations. We simulate the field and intensity distributions as well as the total emitted power for a dipole source of an arbitrary orientation and position in a dielectric particle of various size and geometry. We show that for dielectric particles much smaller than the wavelength, the fluorescence lifetime becomes independent of the shape of the object. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with the analytical calculation for the case of an emitting source situated at the center of a cylindrical object.
