High-order harmonic generation: a coherent ultrashort emission in the XUV — •Pascal Salieres — CEA-SPAM, Centre d’Etudes de Saclay, 91191 Gif-sur-Yvette, France

High-order harmonic generationof intense laser pulses in rare gases is of fundamental interest since it provides a probe of the ultrafast atomic dynamics in a strong laser field. It is also a spectacular nonlinear phenomenon, with harmonic orders as high as 300 extending the emission down to 3 nm. The harmonic source presents unique properties in the XUV spectral range (high spatial and temporal coherence, ultrashort duration, high repetition rate). A growing number of applications are reported in various areas of physics, ranging from atomic and molecular spectroscopy to solid-state and plasma physics. Finally, the possibility of producing sb-fs pulses has recentlz been demonstrated.
