Images of small domains in a monolayer of J-aggregated dye molecules were obtained with a SNOM (Scanning Near Field Optical Microscope) with the tetrahedral tip as a light emitting probe and an auxiliary STM mode for distance control [1,2]. 20 nm domains could be imaged with a high contrast especially well in a depolarized imaging mode [3]. The contrast is tentatively explained by a scanning probe enhanced elastic resonant scattering process (SPEERS)[4]. This mechanism is closely related to a recently discovered phenomenon, that the transmission of a planar gold film can be increased [5] and its absorption can be decreased by the adsorption of a light absorbing layer of dye molecules.
