The free volume in epoxy resins is strongly connected with the cross linking density of resin and hardener. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is an excellent experimental method to determine free volume and therefore aging as well as the evaporation of residues like water and organic molecules. First measurements on the epoxy resin system diglycidil ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) show that the cross linking process of the epoxy resin strongly depends on the curing temperature. The glass transition of completely cured epoxy resins can easily be specified with PALS due to the change of elastic to visco-elastic behaviour at the glass transition temperature. The dependency of free volume and the glass transition on composition and the curing process will be discussed.
