The fatigue behaviour of industrial polymer materials is a highly developing field of materials science. Especially failure mechanisms concerning crack formation and propagation in polymer bulk samples are of special interest. The plastic deformation where the crack propagation takes place, is accompanied by cracks in the µm-range, so-called crazes [1], which are already present outside the optically visible plastic deformation/crack zone when the sample is far from failure. The Microfocus Beamline ID13 at ESRF routinely provides a 5µm-X-ray-beam [2] and hence allows for a spatially resolved investigation of the plastic zone with crazes. The results of combined SAXS/WAXS experiments performed at ID13 on the machine fatigue induced by short-term high force bending of industrial polymers are presented. A clear indication of craze formation in the deformation zone is seen.
