Ternary polymer blends form a variety of mesoscopically structured phases and can serve as a model system to study the influence of structure on dynamics.
Our system consists of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(ethylethylene) (PEE) homopolymers and symmetric PEE-PDMS diblock copolymers. We have applied pulsed field gradient NMR to investigate the diffusional behavior of this ternary polymer blend in the bicontinuous microemulsion phase. Two processes were identified which are due to the diffusion of the PDMS and PEE homopolymers. The changes in the diffusional behavior with respect to the bulk state are discussed in the context of the tortuosity of the structure and exchange of the homopolymers between the PEE and the PDMS domains.
