Exchange kinetics — •Jonas Ortegren, Hubert Motschmann, and Klaus-Dieter Wantke — Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces Am Muhlenberg 9 Haus 2 D-14476 Golm
The exchange dynamic of adsorbed surfactants with the adjacent bulk phase has been investigated by combining Surface Second Harmonic Generation, SHG with the technique of the oscillating bubble. The technique of the oscillating bubble generates a non-equilibrium state by a periodic compression and expansion of the surface in a very well defined fashion. The design of the chamber gives access to the time range of 1 s to 1 ms, the chosen geometry suppresses Maragony flow and allows a direct measurement of the surface pressure. The state of this bubble is then further investigated by SHG yielding the molecular exchange rate of surfactants with the sublayer as the major unknown parameter in the theoretical models describing the surface rheology.
