The dynamics of excitation waves in light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky media is studied in a parameter range close to a Hopf bifurcation of the uniform steady state. It is found that two colliding pulses do not annihilate one another in head-on collision but re-appear after a characteristic time interval and move in opposite directions. Also, the spontaneous generation of pulse pairs has been observed. Under resonant external forcing this behavior leads to the formation of regular standing wave patterns.
