Low-frequency dynamics in protein crystals probed with inelastic light scattering — •Ralf Weissenborn1, Thomas Gisler1, Wolfram Welte2, and Georg Maret11University of Konstanz, Department of Physics, D-78457 Konstanz — 2University of Konstanz, Department of Biology, D-78457 Konstanz

We present high-resolution inelastic and quasi-elastic light scattering spectra of various protein crystals. The wavevector and polarization dependence of the observed inelastic lines allows us to identify lattice acoustical phonons. Data taken at room temperature in a frequency range between 0.5 GHz and 1000 GHz suggest that quasi-optical localized modes associated with conformational fluctuations of individual proteins appear to be strongly overdamped by the hydration shell. We investigate the effect of protein dehydration on the inelastic spectrum and are exploring a possible coupling of microwave irradiation to optical modes via the crystal piezoelectricity.
