Phase transition affected by mixing of soft sphere colloids — •Jianing Liu, Hans Joachim Schöpe, Patrick Wette, and Thomas Palberg — Institut für Physik, Universität Mainz, Staudinger Weg 7, D-55099 Mainz
Suspensions of charge-stabilized colloidal spheres show a plentiful morphology correlated with both phase behaviour and pair interaction depending on surface charge Z*, particle radius a, particle number density n and salt concentration c. Crystal and fluid-crystal coexistence morphologies are directly observed under Bragg-microscopy for several monodisperse latex samples, and binary mixture. Not like hard sphere system, charge-stabilized spherical colloids show a changed fluid-crystal coexistence region at lower volume fraction (in the order of 0.001) with wall crystal tooth-like morphology under different height and crystal density distribution. Additional Polydispersity aroused from mixing two components influences the fluid-crystal phase transition and the solidification kinetics.
