Photoluminescence images of a sample with two-dimensional electron gas confined at a GaAlAs/GaAs interface have been obtained by an infrared-sensitive camera. It has been found that the spatial distribution of photoluminescence is always in a characteristic way inhomogeneous, if a strong perpendicular magnetic field and an external current are applied. Well defined areas of quenched photoluminescence are observed, whose size and form vary synchronously with Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. In some cases the quenching mechanism can be attributed to a self-induced vertical electric field, in other cases it corresponds to a macroscopic current bunching.
