Dynamical stability of a bilayer Wigner crystal and of stripe phases in quantum Hall systems — •G. Meissner, S. Schaaf and U. Schmitt — Theoretische Physik, Universitaet des Saarlandes, Postfach 151150, D - 66041 Saarbruecken, Germany
Intense effort during the last years was dedicated to find solid-like structures in bilayer systems of two parallel quantum wells, since convincing evidence for the 2D Wigner crystal (WC) of interacting electrons in a single layer of quantum Hall systems is still missing after the unexpected discovery of the FQHE. While Laughlin’s incompressible quantum liquid is favored energetically at the filling factor ν=1/3 against the magnetic field induced WC-phase of a triangular lattice of guiding centers, the staggered square lattice of the bilayer WC is shown to be stable dynamically contrary to an unstable plain square lattice as to be inferred from interlayer tunnelling experiments, too. Implications from our approach about a kind of charge-density wave ordering (stripes) at high index partial Landau level (LL) filling and about a possible competition of the WC-phase with composite Fermion formation at the fractional filling factor ν=1/2 of the lowest LL will also be discussed.
