Physics in High Magnetic Fields — •Peter Wyder — Hochfeld-Magnetlabor, Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung und CNRS, Grenoble, Frankreich
High magnetic fields have become more and more important for solid state research in the past years. The generation of high magnetic field and the related technologies will be discussed: The Bitter concept, the polyhelix concept, hybrid systems (generating the world strongest steady fields) and pulsed fields. Taking as examples some presently conducted experiments at the Grenoble High Field Magnet Laboratory it will be shown how interesting and comprehensive physics in high magnetic fields can be. Some current examples to be discussed are two-dimensional electron gases, magnetotransport, heavy-fermion systems, superconductivity, gas discharge, macromolecules and biologic systems.
