An overview is given on the present state of research and development of intermetallic phases with emphasis on phases for possible applications as structural materials at high temperatures. Present worldwide developments of new structural materials are based on titanium aluminides, nickel aluminides and iron aluminides. Besides these No-dqclassicalNo-dq intermetallic phases there is a multitude of other intermetallic phases with high strengths, which show promise for high-temperature applications and which are not subject of research and development because of their brittleness. The discussion is centred on the problems of balancing strength and ductility as a function of crystal structure, composition and microstructure.
