Structurally complex intermetallics in Al alloys with transition metals — •Benjamin Grushko — IFF, Forschungszentrum Juelich, 52425 Juelich
Numerous complex intermetallic phases were observed in Al-rich alloys with transition metals. To date the binary Al-transition metals phase diagrams are fairly well known in spite of the fact that many of them require revision or refinement. In contrast, the information concerning ternary systems of Al with one or two transition metals is much poorer and sporadic. On the other hand, ternary systems contain new and interesting intermetallics, frequently also exhibit wide extension ranges of binary compounds dissolving a third element. The investigation of these alloys can yield new information on the principles of phase formation and, in connection with property measurements, may help to understand the electronic background of the formation rules of structurally complex intermetallics. The Al-Cu(Ni)-Fe(Co,Rh) and Al-Pd-(Mn,Fe,Co) alloy systems were extensively studied during the last several years with respect to the formation of quasicrystals. However, also a great number of complicated cubic, hexagonal, orthorhombic and monoclinic binary and ternary intermetallics were discovered. An overview of these alloy systems will be presented.
