Microstructural characterization of plastically deformed cubic Al63 Pd34 Fe3 — •Marc Heggen, Michael Feuerbacher, and Knut Urban — Institut für Festkörperforschung, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, D-52425 Jülich
Cubic Al63 Pd34 Fe3 is a structurally complex alloy possessing a large unit cell of a = 15.6 Å. The basic structure motif is a framework of edge-sharing icosahedral cages formed by Pd-atoms1. The structure can be regarded as an approximant of the metastable icosahedral Al-Pd-Fe quasicrystal. The aim of the present study is the determination of the plastic deformation behavior and the deformation induced defects in this large-unit-cell material. For this purpose Al63 Pd34 Fe3 samples were deformed uniaxially at 800∘C to different amounts of plastic strain. Subsequently samples were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. A first characterization of defects in the material was performed.
