We have investigated the surfaces of decagonal AlNiCo quasicrystals in ultra-high vacuum. The topography and structure of the tenfold surface obtained after Ar+-sputtering and annealing was investigated using RHEED (Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy). Additionally, the tenfold and the twofold surfaces of d-AlNiCo were prepared by cleaving the quasicrystals in ultra-high vacuum. These were then investigated with AFM, with our interest being focused on the presence of clusters in the surface structure. Finally, initial results obtained on the pseudo-tenfold surface of the ξ’-AlPdMn approximant are presented.
