Deconvolution Method for Resolution Improvement in Magneto-Optical Near-Field Microscopy — •Fabian Kiendl and Gernot Güntherodt — II. Physikalisches Institut der RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen, Germany

In scanning near-field magneto-optical microscopy the resolution is determined by the size of the probe aperture, which is on the order of 50-100 nm. As the desired size of apertures decreases, their fabrication becomes disproportionally more difficult, and their lower throughput affects the signal-to-noise ratio. We propose a computational method to improve the resolution and thereby contrast for a given aperture geometry by deconvolving the aperture geometry from the image. We analyze the impact of disturbances during image acquisition on the deconvolution process and test the method on a model structure as well as on a magneto-optical SNOM image. We find that proper de-noising of a recorded image is a prerequisite for its successful deconvolution and point out why wavelet analysis is superior to Fourier analysis in the trade-off of de-noising versus feature preservation.
