Structure and magnetic properties of CeXMg (X = Pd, Pt, Au) — •A. Das1, B. J. Gibson1, R. K. Kremer1, R.-D. Hoffmann2, and R. Pöttgen2 — 1Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung, Stuttgart, Germany — 2Department Chemie, L.M.U., Munich, Germany
CeXMg (X = Pd, Pt, Au) were synthesised by reacting the elements in sealed tantalum tubes in a high-frequency furnace. They were investigated by X-ray diffraction on both powders and single crystals and were found to adopt the ZrNiAl-type, space group P62/m. We have characterised their magnetic properties by means of resistivity, magnetisation, heat capacity, and a.c. susceptibility down to T=0.3 K. A metallic temperature depencence of the resistivity is found in all cases. Transitions to ferromagnetic LRO order are observed in χd.c. and CP at TC≈ 2.0(2) K for CePdMg and CePtMg whereas CeAuMg orders antiferromangetically at TN≈ 2.1(2) K. At T≈ 0.7(1) K, a further, currently undefined, magnetic transition is seen in CePdMg. At higher temperatures all three compounds closely obey Curie-Weiss berhaviour, with Ce moments comparable to µeffexp≈ 2.1µB, as expected for a free Ce3+ ion.
