Interest in materials with high spin polarisation of the charge carriers has newly arisen due to the need of such materials in spintronics. In this context, we have fabricated Fe3O4 epitaxial thin films by pulsed laser deposition on (001)MgO substrates. One advantage of magnetite is the possibility to grow this material at low temperatures ensuring compatibility with semiconductor growth parameters for future hybrid spintronic devices. By in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction layer-by-layer growth was verified already at 300∘C. The smoothness of the thin films was determined by atomic force microscopy. High resolution X-ray diffraction revealed pure cubic inverse spinel structure. The magnetic properties of the magnetite thin films have been measured using a superconducting quantum interference device.
