In situ XPS and MOKE studies on oxidation driven modifications of the magnetic properties of the Fe/Al interface. — •Jacek Prokop, Andrei Kukunin, Marco Pratzer, and Hans-Joachim Elmers — Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Institut für Physik, Staudingerweg 7, D-55099 Mainz
We prepared epitaxial Fe-films on a W(110) single crystal surface by molecular beam evaporation in UHV conditions. The Fe films were covered by aluminium layers of varying thicknesses. Nominal thickness of pure Al coverages ranged from 1ML up to 5ML. Samples were subsequently natural oxidized in situ. Depending on the aluminium thickness and oxygen exposure the Al covers contained a different amount of the aluminium oxide phase, as was concluded from XPS analysis. Magnetic properties of the Al covered Fe films were measured in situ, before and after oxidation using the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The correlations between the oxidation state of the cover layer and magnetic properties of the interfacial iron layers were discussed.
