Ultrafast magnetization dynamics is of considerable technical and fundamental interest since it enables a substantial shortening of read/write-cycles time in magnetic memories. We combine fsec-laser technique with nm spatial resolution photoemission microscopy. Magnetic sensitivity is obtained by analyzing the spin-polarization of the emitted photolectrons. Photoelectron microscopy of magnetic layers with structure sizes from micrometres down to a few hundred nanometres excitated by coherent laser light shows a strong dependence of the emission characteristics on light polarization and wavelength. This can be explained by plasmon-excitation and other coherence effects. The electron and spin-dynamics of these structures can be studied by pump-probe experiments on a fsec-time scale.
