Spontaneously formed magnetic nanowires — •Andreas Westphalen und Katharina Theis-Bröhl — Institut für Experimentalphysik / Festkörperphysik, Ruhr-Universität, 44780 Bochum

The formation of nanometer-scale periodic structures on crystal surfaces has become a subject of interest in recent experimental and theoretical studies. We used facetted crystal surfaces as substrates for the preparation of magnetic nanowires with a periodicity of several hundreds of nm. By annealing m-plane sapphire in air, the surface facets into a regular pattern of roof-like structures with an height of several tenth of nm1,2 By evaporating iron from an effusion cell within an MBE-system under a very low angle to the substrate, only one of the both facet surfaces of the roof-like structure was covered by the deposit, as previously shown by Huth et al.1 for Fe and Nb. This procedure leads to a periodically ordered nanowire film structure. AFM measurements on the facetted surfaces as well as on the deposited films are presented and compared to x-ray studies. The magnetic properties of the structured films were measured by specular vector-MOKE. We acknowledge founding by DFG, SFB 491.
