Magnetic structure of domain walls in ultrathin Fe films on the W(110) surface — •M. Heide1, G. Bihlmayer1 und S. Blügel2 — 1IFF, Forschungszentrum Jülich, D-52425 Jülich — 2Fachbereich Physik, Universität Osnabrück, D-49069 Osnabrück
In atomically thin Fe films on the W(110) surface ferromagnetic domains are formed. For an Fe monolayer the walls between two adjacent domains are very narrow, while for a double layer they are extended over several atomic rows.
We investigated the possibility of explaining the rotation of the magnetisation direction inside the domain walls by the competition of the forces caused by spin-stiffness and anisotropy. For that purpose we combined the results of our calculations of the spin-stiffness energies and the independently calculated anisotropy energies of a mono- and a double layer Fe on the W(110) surface. The magnetisation profiles of the domain walls resulting from these ab initio calculations were compared with experiment.
The calculations were performed with the program FLEUR, which is based on density functional theory and using the FLAPW-method.
