The structure of Fe layers deposited on Cu (001) was investigated
by surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD). For room temperature (RT)
deposition we observe well defined intensity oscillations at the
(010) anti-phase reflection condition as a function of deposition
time indicating layer-by-layer growth, however with double layer
growth for the first two mono-layers (ML). The intensity
analysis for a RT 6ML sample reveals the presence of
pseudomorphic fcc-Fe with an almost constant interlayer spacing
of 1.77(3) Å on average for di,i+1 (i=2,5), however the top
interlayer spacing, d12, is expanded to 1.82(3) Å. A small
fraction (0.14 ML) of a 7th ML on top of the whole stack was
determined at about 1.44 Å above the 6th layer, corresponding
to bcc-Fe. Cooling the sample to 130 K did not lead to
significantly different results for the interlayer spacings.
In contrast, we find that lateral disorder becomes important
resembling the formation of a zig-zag-arrangement of the 6th
layer. These results are discussed in
the framework of recent theoretical and experimental results on
the magnetic properties of Fe on Cu(001) [1,2].
