The Interface Structure of Fe/Pd(001): Molecular Beam Epitaxy versus Pulsed Laser Deposition — •Holger L. Meyerheim, M. Vedpathak, V. Shah, Y. Lu, and J. Kirschner — MPI f. Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, D-06120 Halle

Using surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) we have investigated the interface structure of Fe/Pd(001) in the Fe-coverage range between 0.2 and 2 monolayers (ML). Fe was deposited under UHV conditions on Pd(001) kept at room temperature by two different methods, namely by thermal deposition (TD) from a Fe rod and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). In the case of thermally grown Fe/Pd(001) the analysis of the intensity distribution along the crystal truncation rods indicates, that Fe growths pseudomorphic as fcc-Fe on Pd(001) without alloy formation. Alloy formation is only observed after mild annealing. For instance, a two layer Fe50Pd50 alloy is formed after heating a 1 ML sample for 10 minutes at 130 C. In contrast, for PLD deposited Fe the formation of a shallow multilayer interface alloy is observed. In the Fe-coverage range between about 0.7 and 1.3 ML we find a pure Fe-capping layer above the alloy structure. The results are discussed in the context of recent analyses of the preparation dependent magnetic properties of Fe/Pd(001).
