We present field programmable spin logic gates formed by spin dependent tunnelling (SDT) elements. Feasibility with sub-micron sized tunnelling elements is shown. We further introduce a principle for the clocked operation. In this scheme, the switching behaviour of the soft magnetic layer of the SDT elements forming the spin logic gate needs to be characterised by a so called Stoner-Wohlfarth astroid. Down to a width of 600 nm we discuss the switching behaviour of SDT elements with various shapes and different aspect ratios. From the measurements we conclude that even not single domain particles shows astroid-like switching behaviour. Finally, we show a field programmable spin logic device in clocked operation.
